A plank position is defined by the fact that you have the body (core or torso with legs) in a straight form not by the extension of your arms. You can do a plank with your arms bent or extended. It is actually harder to do the plank with extended arms as your arms may possibly give way quicker than bent arms would.

Another great variation is to rest on your forearms, kept parallel. Seems to also work on your upper body stabillity.
