definately not helped by hypertrorhy alone. However, in certain athletes hypertrophy phases are needed. Basically, muscles allow for greater development of certain qualities. There is no reason why they should hamper conditioning, its conditioning that hampers the development of muscles. A balance must be struck depending on the sport and athlete, there r countless variables.

i do understand the science of what you're saying but there is a reason why sprinters and fighters (for the most part) don't look like bodybuilders... being muscular is easily confused with being a weight lifter or a bodybuilder by the ignorant (ben). sports that require a delicate balance of speed and power are in now way helped by hypertrophy alone.

bbs look for aesthetic muscle mass, ie. big round biceps, triceps, quads etc--this kind of growth will slow you down regardless of what sport you're in. citing tyson as an example isnt very realistic because despite his size and speed he did not train like a bodybuilder; he did not do hypertrophy exercises, he trained like a boxer and just happened to be a genetic freak. an athlete that is genetically predisposed to retaining/gaining muscle mass does not necessarily mean they lift weights all day.

100% agreed, but that is definitely not what he meant. unless he's completely retarded or high you'd think he'd at least know that the word speed is not synonymous with strength. they're completely different aspects of athleticism, albeit 2 aspects that lend themselves to many sports like the example you gave.

A large muscle doesn't mean u are fast or slow. Tyson and manny P are both fast and powerful. Hypertrophy training on its own (bodybuilding) will slow u down even more, but BB don't care. However, hypertrophy should add to ur potential for maximum strength gains when training for Max strength. Its can also increase ur capacity for gains in speed. Speed + strentgh = power + mike tyson, 100 meter sprinters etc. Its hard to write about this in a text box lol.

Referring to Bizzle187 and Ben710the problem is ben said 'speed' instead of 'strength'i assume Ben is referring to the musculer strength component of fitness, which is directly affected by the cross-sectional area of muscle. Meaning the greater the girth the greater the force the muscules can exert. Therefore, he should of said, big muscles=strength.sprinters need muscular power at the start of the race and strength is the foundation of power therefore they have a large girth
