A study done at the University of Michigan could benefit the 29% of Americans with high blood pressure. For 18 weeks one group of rats were fed a salty diet. Another group was fed the same salty diet plus a powder form of red, green and purple table grapes. The rats that ate the grape-enriched diet had lower blood pressure, reduced inflammation throughout their bodies, fewer signs of heart muscle damage and better heart function.

Responding to a court order, the Environmental Protection Agency is requiring industries to reduce lead in the air by 90%. That's the good news. The bad news is the EPA's plan for 236 new or relocated monitors represents only half as many as it used to have and not enough to detect thousands of lead polluters nationwide. The plan also allows companies to average lead exposure over a 3-month period, which could result in dangerous spikes of lead emissions from smelters, metal mines, waste incinerators and other polluters.

U.S. sales of organic foods and beverages increased from $1 billion in 1990 to $20 billion in 2007. People are willing to pay more for organic products because they think they're healthier. Researchers at Copenhagen University disagree. In a study that included apples, carrots, kale, peas and potatoes, the researchers found organic produce doesn't contain more nutrients than non-organic produce grown with pesticides.

Because Anthrax is easily treated if caught early, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services plans to use volunteer, government mail carriers to deliver emergency antibiotics to areas affected by anthrax attack. According to the plan, mail carriers will have advance supplies of antibiotics to protect themselves and their families; and they'll be escorted by local police as they deliver several days' worth of antibiotics and an anthrax fact sheet to residences.

When it comes to plant-based foods, think black. Black foods are especially healthy. Black rice is high in anthocyanin, which fights cardiovascular disease. Black beans are rich in terpenoids, which stop the growth of certain cancers. Black tea is rich in flavonoids, which protect against neurological disease; and blackberries are rich in polyphenols, which help prevent diseases related to chronic inflammation.

There are two kinds of physical pain. The acute kind goes away as the body heals itself. The chronic kind lasts at least six months after the healing process is completed. Although there are both over-the-counter and prescription medications for acute pain, the treatment of the chronic kind usually includes therapy, as well as medication. Physical therapy, such as stretching and strengthening, can reduce discomfort.

To lose weight requires motivation and that can be harder to find than diet books or exercise machines. Experts suggest setting goals and rewarding yourself when you reach those goals. Other suggestions include going to exercise classes, working out with a partner and keeping an exercise log. Although one exercise guru suggested putting a before picture on the refrigerator, I think this quote from Margaret Thatcher would be more effective.

I admit it. I've taken my feet for granted. I've forced them into shoes because the shoes looked good - not because they felt good. After years of this abuse I'm feeling "defeeted".

After a bit of sole searching - of my shoes - I discovered that the majority of shoe designers are men. I wonder if women's shoes would fit better if those men tried to put the shoe on the other foot.

Everyone has an opinion about cooking. Robert Frost said, "There is one thing more exasperating than a wife who can cook and won't and that's a wife who can't cook and will". Buddy Hackett said, "My mother's menu consisted of two things: take it or leave it" and Phyllis Diller said her meals were so bad her kids thought Thanksgiving was meant to commemorate Pearl Harbor Day.

There are 5 components of good health. The first is genetics. Although you can't change genetics, pharmaceutical manufacturers help us live with them. Bayer, one of the largest manufacturers of over-the-counter medications and supplements, is starting a line of products for aging baby boomers. "Nutritional Science" will feature labels that make the benefits of each product clear, enabling consumers to choose the products that are right for them.
